  Sidenotes

    (454) Actually the original text of In God’s Love  did not use any capitalization so even “God” was “god” and “Spirit” was “spirit” and “Holy” was “holy”.

  (455) The Catechism also notes that Paul has several different titles for the same Spirit and this does not cause a theological identification difficulty.  CCC 693

  (456) 1 Corinthians 12:4-10
  (457) Galatians 5:22-24
  (458) In the course of time, if other people wiser than myself see it theologically beneficial to make three separate lists, this can be easily done by using the Index of In God’s Love which was set up in this manner.
Please note that here in Chapter 2 part 9 we are exploring the essence of the Holy Spirit when talking about being “in the Holy Spirit” while later in Chapter 9 “We live in Christ and God’s Spirit Dwells in Us.” we explore the effect of the Holy Spirit on people who are living in the Spirit.   Here we are exploring a layer of the essence of God’s Holy Spirit rather than the effect of the spirit, something like exploring the wind itself

(459) Perhaps I could have combined the “is the spirit, from the spirit, in the spirit list” with the  “spirits of the spirit list,” but I believe that there is value in taking these two ways of looking at the Holy Spirit separately.  I believe neither conflict with the other, nor for that matter what we believe about the Holy Spirit. and not the effect or force of the wind.

  (460) We use “major” and “minor” to distinguish biblically the prophets with the sole criteria being the length of the book of the prophet.  It in no way diminishes nor enhances the position or importance of any of the biblical books to call them major or minor.  The same is true here.

Chapter 2 We Believe in One Triune God (continued) 7/12

Part 9 The Holy Spirit the Third Person of the Trinity
                      Section 1 Introduction

168          God’s spirit is holy.  Sometimes within the writings of In God’s Love, the Spirit of God is called “Holy Spirit” and connected to this title are many things.  Other times In God’s Love merely writes “God’s Spirit”.(454)   I cannot perceive any difference from when they use one term or the other.  (Perhaps people wiser than I am can.)  Therefore, I have decided to treat the “Holy Spirit” and “God’s Spirit” as the same.(455)   Just as we know that if one is discussing “Jesus” or “Jesus Christ” we are discussing the same second person of the Trinity, so too, whether we are discussing the Holy Spirit or God’s Spirit, I believe we are discussing the same third person of the Trinity. If I have erred in representing In God’s Love with this connection,  I hope the Holy Spirit, or God's Spirit, will see to the correction by inspiring others to correct me.

169           In the letters traditionally attributed to Saint Paul in the Bible, there are a lot of things written about the Spirit.  Paul had various ways of speaking about the Holy Spirit.  He had the “Gifts of the Holy Spirit list”: wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, mighty deeds, prophecy, discernment of spirits, varieties of tongues, and interpretation of tongues,(456)  and the “Fruits of the Holy Spirit” list love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (457)  We could compare the two lists, the two ways of speaking about the Holy Spirit, and see a lot of connections.  There is value in this.  There is also value in reflecting upon the two ways of seeing the Holy Spirit separately.  Neither conflicts with the other.  I rather suspect that neither was meant to be an exhaustive, complete list of the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit.  Even with all the truth that is presented in these lists, Paul also had other things to say about the Holy Spirit that could be connected to one or both of these lists and some things that perhaps could only be connected with some difficulty, text proofing, or multiple layers of theological connections.   Please keep in mind, the Church has had 2000 years for the Holy Spirit to guide its understanding of what Paul and the rest of Scripture meant concerning the Holy Spirit, but our reflection and dependence upon the Holy Spirit’s guidance concerning In God’s Love is just beginning.

170           The messengers of In God’s Love have a lot to say about the Holy Spirit, too.  The messengers describe the Holy Spirit and they also write about the Spirits of the Holy Spirit.  In the 532 passages, they use three phrases to describe the Holy Spirit.  The types of phrases are as follows: 1) a descriptive phrase, "God's Spirit is ___" 2) a phrase of giving, "from God's spirit comes ___" 3) and a phrase of essence, "in God's Spirit is ___".  These phrases deal with subjects that are often identical, love, life, creation, understanding and others, so I have decided to merge them together as one descriptive strand which makes up the material for sections 2-8.  One thing they mention is that the Holy Spirit is connected to Christ (Section 2).  They also mention the relationship of all three persons of the Trinity to each other, but this will be dealt with later (Part 10 of this Chapter.)  They describe the Holy Spirit in awesome ways (Section 3), as creator and source and unity of life (Section 4), as compassionate and gentle (Section 5), as joyful (Section 6), as understanding (Section 7), and other descriptions (Section 8).(458)  The messengers also write that the  Holy Spirit is the “Spirit of Spirits” and that all spirits (that are good) have their origin in the Holy Spirit.  Sections 9-13 presents these Spirits of the Holy Spirit (459) and some subjects from the descriptive strand above will naturally repeat for we are dealing with the same Holy Spirit.  Some Spirits of the Holy Spirit they only  briefly mention (Section 9). (460)   Four spirits of the spirit have prominence in the book, as shown by the amount written about them: the Spirit of kindness (Section 10), Spirit of virtue (Section 11), Spirit of wisdom (Section 12), and Spirit of Earth time (Section 13).  In the presentation of these prominent spirits, with the exception of the Spirit of Earth time, I will present each spirit in the following order: 1) The spirit’s relationship to “the rest” of God  2) the qualities of the spirit 3) the actions of the spirit 4) the effects of the spirit.  The messengers also write about actions of the Holy Spirit as a whole which I will also present (Section 14).

171           All of Scripture is inspired and yet I find a certain joy and peace of mind when reflecting on certain keystone gems of the Bible like the Beatitudes, the Our Father, the Gifts of the Spirit, the Fruits of the Spirit, the beginning of the Gospel of John, the vine and the branches, the parable of the Two Sons, the good Samaritan, Jeremiah 31:31 and others.  In these places I find such concise and beautiful truth that perhaps the Holy Spirit was working overtime.  As mentioned, unlike Paul, these “lists” or ways of expressing the beauty of the Holy Spirit are spread out all over the book In God’s Love.  One place, where there is such a joining of thoughts that it is just a wonderful place to rest with the Holy Spirit and pray, is passage # 153.  Like the Holy Spirit, it is a flowing passage.  It is a litany which, like a love song, lends itself to the beauty of experiencing, appreciating and believing, but does not do too much for the systematic hyper organizational categorizing of the great Spirit of Spirits. Before reading any more of “The Presentation”, I encourage the reader  to reread passage # 153 “The Litany of the Holy Spirit”, and do not organize it, but just reflect, pray and enjoy feeling the breath of God.

Section 2 The Holy Spirit is Connected to Jesus

172           The commonality of mission, the interrelatedness, closeness, and unity of the Holy Spirit and Jesus is presented in the Catechism.(461)   St. Paul assumes unity of Christ and His Spirit as expressed in Romans: “Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him”(462)   The messengers also witness to the closeness of mission and unity in the following passages: “Come here, all you who are of Earth.  Bring your spirits in communion with Christ Jesus.  This is Earth’s love song to a sacred God who waits with such tenderness.  In this love song, sung on Earth, is God’s Spirit reached.”(463)   In the prayer of the Saints they write, “Kind Jesus, Sacred Heart, it is in your Spirit I wish to remain forever. Amen”(464)

Section 3 The Holy Spirit is Awesome

173           The Holy Spirit is awesome.  The Spirit is awesome because it is blessed.(465)   The messengers of In God’s Love  write, “Holy of Holies which is the Spirit of God.”(466)   The Holy Spirit is awesome because “His Spirit is so real and beautiful”(467)  for “in God’s Spirit is unlimited beauty.”(468)   The Holy Spirit is awesome because God is the “Beloved Father, Spirit of such wonder, righteous one.”(469)   In the Holy Spirit are all good things.(470)  “His Spirit is all mankind needs,”(471)  and that is truly awesome.  The Holy Spirit is mighty.(472)   Finally, the Holy Spirit is awesome because of the spirit’s vastness.  Earlier, when presenting the humility of God, (paragraphs 83-84) I touched upon what I feel is one of the most profound and stunning statements of the book: “Here is a God who is so small in stature.  His Spirit is vast.”(473)   They also expound on the reality that “(God’s) Spirit is a Spirit that goes on forever from the beginning of time to the most distant star and beyond.”(474)
