Chapter 2 We Believe in One Triune God (continued) 9/12

Part 9 The Holy Spirit the Third Person of the Trinity
                                                                                                   (continued)

Section 9 The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Spirits

190          It has been stated that everything God created, including the Earth,  has a spirit and that all spirits come from the Holy Spirit.(555)   In the Roman Rite of Confirmation, the “Bishop extends his hands over the whole group of the confirmands. Since the time of the apostles this gesture has signified the gift of the Spirit.  The bishop invokes the outpouring of the Spirit in these words:  All-powerful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, by water and the Holy Spirit you freed your sons and daughters from sin and gave them new life.  Send your Holy Spirit upon them to be their helper and guide.  Give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding,  the spirit of right judgment and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence.  Fill them with the spirit of wonder and awe in your presence.  We ask this through Christ our Lord.”(556)

191           All these spirits come from the Holy Spirit.  As the messengers state, “Spirit of spirits is the Holy Spirit who is God”(557)   Just as the Confirmation Rite mentions many spirits, In God’s Love also mentions many spirits, but the book primarily focuses on four spirits of the Spirit: the Spirits of wisdom, compassion, virtue and Earth time.  Before looking into these spirits of the Holy Spirit, we will briefly acknowledge the other spirits of the spirit that In God’s Love mentions. (558)

192           Already mentioned when discussing the Holy Spirit are the Spirit of mercy,(559)  the Spirit of comfort,(560)  the Spirit of right reason(561)  the Spirit of peace,(562)  and the Spirit of understanding,(563)   There are other spirits of the Holy Spirit mentioned in the book that have not yet been noted.  Some of the other spirits are: the Spirit of truth,(564)   the Spirit of righteousness,(565)  the Spirit of good example,(566)  the Spirit of good desires,(567)  the Spirit of gladness,(568)  the Spirit of inspiration,(569)  the Spirit of music,(570)  the Spirit of beauty,(571)  the Spirit of hope,(572)  the Spirit of light,(573)  and the Spirit of Earth.(574)

                      Section 10 Spirit of Wisdom

193           In Scripture, perhaps, there is not a better place to reflect upon wisdom than Wisdom 6:22-11:1.  In the book In God’s Love there is, perhaps, no better place to reflect upon wisdom than passage # 168 “Wisdom Is a Spirit of God’s Spirit”.  Before reading any further in “The Presentation,” I would encourage the reader to reflect on both readings.

194           In God, what is the place of the spirit of wisdom?  The messengers state that “Here is God’s wisdom.  It is sung in spirits of saints.  Sing in wisdom.  She is a blessed saint.  God is her author.”(575)    I have mentioned that the messengers’ usage of the word “saint” refers to any being, any spirit, anything created by God (which would include everything) that does what God wants it to do.(576)    They believe that wisdom is in God’s Spirit and is a spirit of God’s spirit as they express in the following statements: “All wisdom is in God’s Spirit.”(577)  “Wisdom is in God’s Spirit.  Wisdom, understanding and knowledge are spirits of God’s blessed Spirit.”(578)   They symbolically express the connection of the Spirit and wisdom in the following statements: “God’s Spirit is reached in wisdom’s book.”(579)  “Put on the cloak of wisdom which is in God’s Spirit.”(580)  Finally, in one of the most profound statements about wisdom they state that “God’s love is wisdom’s child.  In all her stations, most wise is this love.” (581)  Rephrased, wisdom’s child is God’s love.  The beginning of love comes from being wise.

195           Furthermore, the messengers assert that “God is pleased with wisdom.  This kind spirit is reached by all who are in God’s Spirit and seek her out.”(582)   It is through wisdom that God communicates with us: “He (God) hears every word (of our prayer) and answers in His wisdom as He pleases... Wisdom is in God. In His wisdom comes your kind reply.”(583)   Can we even imagine God communicating in an unwise or foolish way?  Me neither.  It would be so ungodly.  Wisdom is the way God communicates with us, or as the book of Wisdom puts it, “For she (wisdom) is instructress in the understanding of God, the selector of his works.”(584)   In a similar fashion, the messengers explain that “in God’s Spirit, she (wisdom) is God’s spiritual mediator.”(585)

196           What are some of the qualities of the spirit of wisdom?  The messengers state that “She is a very pleasant spirit,”(586)  They also state that she is, “soothing and protecting her children with her very warm, soft feathers.  So gentle is her voice cooing to her young ones.”(587)   She also “delights in children.”(588)   “Wisdom is with those who love God,”(589)  and “is delighted when people please God.”(590)

197           What are some of the actions of the spirit of wisdom?  The spirit of wisdom comes to the people who are trying to be holy and follow the Lord.  The writer of Proverbs states, “The fear of the LORD  is the beginning of knowledge, wisdom and instruction fools despise.”(591)   The messengers write, “Out of the mouth of wisdom come blessings of great beauty.  She sings in the heart of those who listen to the word of God.”(592)   They also state that “Wisdom comes in such spirits who know how to stay lovely.”(593)   Wisdom came to King Solomon.  According to the Book of Wisdom, “I (King Solomon) prayed, and prudence was given me: I pleaded and the spirit of Wisdom came to me.”(594)   The messengers concur on this event: “King Solomon walked in wisdom’s inspirational spirit.  Such wisdom his spirit conceived.  In all his wisdom were his people blessed.  Oh God, such wisdom Solomon had.”(595)

198           Wisdom also comes to the lowly.  They state that “Her song takes small children to God’s Spirit.”(596)    “She is sent to the poor and lowly, such spirits who are small and humble.  God’s own, dear children know her.”(597)  “She wants your smallness.”(598)

199           Wisdom came to the young Earth.  The book of Wisdom notes that “Now with you (God) is Wisdom who knows your works and was present when you made the world; Who understands what is pleasing in your eyes.”(599)   The messengers also write, “Dear ones, her (wisdom’s) love for Earth is great.  She sang on Earth when Earth was created.  So delighted was wisdom.  She sang of her love in God’s Spirit…. In her spirit is the joy of creation, sweet kindness.”(600)    They continue describing this playful action of the spirit of wisdom saying, “O sweet Earth, while you were young, wisdom called you her own.  She ran on your mountains and played in your valleys.  Your spirit was her delight.”(601)   The spirit of wisdom still sings in the beauty of the Earth, especially the morning.  “Wisdom sings her love song to the Earth.  She blesses you all.  O song of wisdom, bring the morning, and bring forth the beauty of flowers.”(602)

200           The spirit of wisdom guides and teaches us.  King Solomon prays, “Send her (Wisdom) forth from your holy heavens and from your glorious throne dispatch her that she may be with me and work with me that I may know what is your pleasure.  For she knows and understands all things and will guide me discreetly in my affairs and safeguard me by her glory.”(603)

201           The messengers of In God’s Love write that “The wisdom of God is God’s sweet Spirit.  She is a teacher. … It teaches Earth beings about God’s will for mankind.”(604)   “So wisely, she guides and instructs.  In God’s Spirit, much comfort comes to her students.  She teaches her subjects such beautiful things.  Some are ancient.  Some are new.”(605)   This is some of what the spirit of wisdom teaches: “In wisdom’s school, the beauty of beauty is taught: desire.”(606)   “This is wisdom’s song, ‘Take a wise way.  Make the right decision.’”(607)

202           According to the Book of Wisdom, as cited above, King Solomon notes that Wisdom safeguards us.  The messengers write that “She (wisdom) shelters the wise in her spirit, in God’s Spirit.”(608)   This protector is not timid in her role: “Let evil come near it if dares.  Should such signs enter in wisdom’s door, this child of God shall send it away like a wounded animal with its tail between its legs, sounding out agony in its running.  This is written: ‘In God’s Spirit, rest.’ Amen.”(609)

203           What are some of the effects of the spirit of wisdom?  The messengers write of some of the effects that the spirit of wisdom has.  First, with the spirit of wisdom comes understanding. “Such sacred inspiration from God, come make blessed understanding welcome. Seek her.  She is in wisdom’s spirit.”(610)    Second, with wisdom comes right reasoning or good judgment: “She brings right reason and good judgment.”(611)   “She makes spirits see what is right and useful.”(612)    Third, the spirit of wisdom lifts up the lowly: “She exalts the lowly and blesses the humble.  She puts down the mighty and powerful.  She inspires widows, orphans and all who are small and needy of Earth….  Come, wisdom, cast your treasures in the streets.  Come, saints who are poor and needy, receive wisdom and learning.”(613)  Finally, she leads us to eternal rest with God: “Eternal rest is wisdom’s child.  Eternal death is life without God’s love.”(614)
